I have never known myself to get to the end of a first-time project and remember to photograph the end processes. So, I have no photos of the final assembly of the scarecrow. However, if you purchased the pattern, you have the same instructions I followed.

I tried a couple of different techniques:

  1. I sewed the raffia to the scarecrow’s head (remember I don’t like glue) before assembling the hat.
  2. I sewed the hat to the head (I don’t know if that was part of the instructions or not; by the end I was doing whatever I thought needed to be done to complete the project).
  3. Got the idea to add a crow from Bee Sroe on the Facebook Pin Loom Weaving Support Group.
  4. I added the Mini Pumpkin from the Halloween Pin Loom Set by Deborah Bagley.

A few words about the mini pumpkin:

I used two colors in the squares to break up the solid orangeness of it. I also used two colors and the 2″ square Weave-It to make the stem (I’m not crazy about those colors, but I really was sick of experimenting). For the leaf I used the 1.5″ square my husband built for me. It has the same number of pins as the 2″ Weave-It, but the pins are closer together, so it makes a smaller square.

If you want to make gathering easier, for example, if you need to divide a square in half with a gathered line of stitches, you can weave in an extra piece of yarn as you go. (If you remember, as well as not liking glue, I do not like to weave in extra ends of any kind.)

Here’s my method for weaving in a gathering strand.

After warping L3, place an extra strand on top of strand #16.

Weave over the two strands in position 16 as if they were one.

When you take the square off the loom, you'll have a strand for gathering.

Wonderful technique idea. And your scarecrow is great.
